Conventional war has now been replaced by a cocktail of lawfare, info war, population movement and targeted physical intimidation. The Russians, Chinese, Ummah, EU and USA have their versions.

The imperative of national unity and cultural cohesion which characterized the era of external conflict is being replaced by the need to form ever smaller subgroups. In the quest for dominance we no longer fight over Sugarloaf Hill, we fight over institutions.

Call it intersectionalism, identity politics or nationalism. Or call it some Spring, it's the same thing: the shattering of custom and its replacement by permanent division.

We now conquer by jailing our opponents or deplatforming them, if not hard striking their websites. Universal surveillance is a key tool. We spy not on other populations but our own.

Ironically for an era obsessed with safe spaces and tolerance there is little of either left. No one is safe. And in that context each new restriction whether on the use of cash or gun ownership becomes ominous.

The future of Jihad is no longer the dusty armed man in the desert but the stooge congressman or hack in the House of Lords.

The net result of all this is the strange sense that we have been evicted from our homes. What happened to my country? To the church on the corner? To family gatherings? Our trust networks? They've been turned into battlegrounds.
