I am listening to 103.1FM in Kaduna right now & one Ustaz Adam Zaria is trying so hard to convince people against @elrufai on the basis that for a deputy he took a woman who is not allowed to be part of governance but to stay at home. I am sad that in 2019 we are still debased.
Why have the Ulama refused to teach us about strong women who lived during the time of our Nabiy SAW instead of persistently pushing the rhetoric of the blessed secluded homemaker or the irresponsible street monger? Why are girls not taught about these women as inspiration?
Khadija bint Khuwaylid who was our Nabiy's strength. The role of Aisha bint Abu Bakr in education & governance after the death of SAW. Rufaidah Al Islamiyya the first female nurse & surgeon and a woman who the Prophet SAW consulted.
Khawlah bint Al Azwar a sister to Zirrar in Azwar who challenged the status quo of her time & Allah sent down a verse to support her & other women. She was also a badass soldier who flies on horse through the enemy ranks & whose fighting skills saved her brother from captivity.
Nusaybah bint Kaab Al Ansariyya wo fought on battles & acted as shield to SAW. The fearless Sumayya bint Khabbat, Zaynab bint Ali who fought alongside her brother in the battle of Karbala. Much later emerged muslimnicons such as Rabia Al Adawiyya, Razia Sultan, Fatima Al Fihri...
Lubna of Cordoba, our own Nana Asmau bint Usman ibn Fodio. The men of those times consulted their women and their is no instance of them being relegated to the Kitchen and servicing domestic needs of men alone.
The involvement and listening ear to women are among the factors that contributed to the rise and success of the Islamic empire. Almost 1500 years later why have Islamic societies regressed as regards the place of women on society?
In four days it will be the international women's day. Today I call on all Muslim women to refuse to give in to irrelevance. We are half the human population and should have a say in governance and all decisions that affect our lives.
We are human like our Male counterpart. We have a heart and a brain. We have dreams and aspirations. We need to feel we are in control of our destinies. We should therefore fight for the things we believe in but most important let us not forget that we are Muslims above all.
Let us study our religion & define our place in society. Let us not allow the subjective opinions of some religious leaders kill the drive in us. Let us continue to fight for a society which is truly fair & supportive of women. Happy #InternationalWomensDay2019 in advance.
