so! let's talk about the #cryptocurrency phenomenon again. $BITC / @Bitcoin, $ETH / @ethereum, $USDT / @Tether_to, $BNB / @binance — there are a LOT of these #cryptocurrencies out there, maybe even millions of them. and that's a first clue about them and about #capitalism.

it's gospel #capitalism that the activities of "the #markets"—capitalist propaganda i.e. #business and #finance and #investment #journalism, not to mention all the #science and #technology journalism that's chiefly #advertising for corporations—are supernaturally powerful.

the central lie is that "the markets" (i.e. the sum total of all monetary transactions by all money-seeking entities in #capitalism) are the best possible mechanism for fulfilling every conceivable human need.

if it's not "on the market", then you don't really need it.

#capitalism broke #computing and the #Internet, and it's tough to see how to repair the damage—and by the way, @TheDemocrats assisted in this destruction. @BillClinton's presidency was *disastrous* to technology.

the worst was this: capitalism made the #Internet a *joke*.

it's still a joke. @mtaibbi and @jessesingal and @mattyglesias, and the rest of the elite "influencer" set who have proliferated in American #journalism (and polluted it), have assisted immensely in this massive _trivialization_ of a technological achievement.

and for no other reason than right-wing spite: the @GOP is a party of hatreds and they *loathe* Sen. @algore, who would have made a much better President than the genocidal coke fiend from Connecticut/Texas. they associated "the Internet" with Sen. Gore, and spat on it.

the last twenty or thirty years have seen a remarkable intellectual phenomenon: #computer technicians, people whose sole area of expertise is computer #programming and #software engineering and other related disciplines, have come to be regarded as "Renaissance Men".

the "#STEM Lord" is an artifact of this phenomenon. while "STEM" is supposed to comprise mathematics and engineering and mathematics, the typical "STEM Lord" is not well-versed in any of these things—the typical "STEM Lord" is in #computers. they are a *technician*.

that is to say, #computer professionals are people with *limited* educations, who are devoted solely to mastering the intricacies of a certain sort of machinery, namely the modern computer.

men like @fchollet, @JeffDean, @antoniogm, and @ID_AA_Carmack typify the class.

@XAVIAERD #BillGates. He's an #evil, #hypercritical, #genocidal #Maniac, masquerading as a Philanthropist!

Everybody thinks he was the #BigCheese of #ComputerSoftware. That's not true, either. I was privileged to program on Digital Equipment (#DEC) Computers ...
When I programmed #DEC #Computers, running #DEC #Software, #computing was fun. I loved it. Then along comes #BillGates with #MSDos, which I believe he ripped off anyway, and suddenly everyone's talking #ComputerViruses! ...
Whether he's creating #ComputerViruses or sponsoring #DrAnthonyFauci to use #GainOfFunctionResearch to create #Covid19 or dumping #crap in the skies with #Chemtrails or scheming to #Lockdown the entire world or selling poisonous #vaccines #BillGates is shitting on #TheWholeWorld!

(1/16) Applied Materials $AMAT, a leading provider of #semiconductor equipment, became the latest company in the #chip space to warn of weakening trends (also ~$400mm impact from #Chinese #export regulations).
(2/16) The semiconductor space has seen a ton of volatility this year, but sector fundamentals and share prices are entirely following the playbook of the last several decades. Let’s take a quick look…
(3/16) The industry continues to be deeply cyclical (despite playing into secular trends like #computing / processing power – meaning the long term trend is bumpy, but higher) with y/y growth rates rising much more than end-demand for products, as well as falling more steeply.

On #biocompute news, $TSLA Tesla AI day gave some technical details on how they do their training and video labelling. It seems $NVDA Nvidia GPUs are the norm, with a 14,000 HPC heavily optimised on the software side. #pytorch #AVX2 #CUDA #SMT #smol #CUDNN Image
None of this is for the purpose of #Bioinformatics applications, rather here it's for Full Self-Driving software, but the technical details show some choices for high-throughput #AI training that one could compare to the #ComputationalBiology #ComputeAcceleration world.

The issue with #NP problems is Uncertainty. The greater amount of information about the problem, the less Uncertainty & therefore, the less Computational Complexity. In case of no Uncertainty, NP=P. #NPplusInformationEqualsP @ulisescortes @sierra_carles @vdignum @wooldridgemike
In practice, that's what #DeepLearning does: it gathers data of the problem but runtime is P.
In Research too: we publish about problems until we find a P solution and then we continue optimising the solution in case we need a trade-off PSPACE/PTIME. #AI #MachineLearning
Could we create a Problem Information System to reduce the complexity of Research in general?Could it be automated to the greatest extent? That would be a General Problem Solver. We can be greedy & blindly publish in words everything we might solve, or we could start making a PIS

Don't overspecialize.
It will make you overdependent on other people.
Always be a #generalist.
The problem with doing a #PhD degree is that it makes you highly specialized in a minuscule area of academic interest.
Utter rubbish!
Sheer waste of time, financial resources and cognitive capabilities.
Many people who are struggling to find decent work after Postgraduate Qualification, such as MSc/MA/MBA, end up enrolling on a #PhD Degree program.
How bloody melancholic that is!?
Seen many such cases in Life and Hard Sciences.

Passion project time! I love the HP-45 #calculator. It's beautiful on the outside, but I wanted to show people that it's beautiful on the inside, too. So, as a #coding & #retrocomputing challenge I wrote a simulator, & I'm now making it available to all. (Retweets welcomed.) 1/7 Image
The simulator was designed for the Z80-MBC2, a computer designed by @Just4Fun_J4Fun with a #Z80 processor running CP/M. (If you like #retrocomputing, do try it.) But after some tedious wrangling, I was able to write code which also compiled for Windows, Linux & MacOS. 2/7 Image
I like the sense of retro-tech and (unfulfilled) futures which the terminal application provides: it's a #hauntological calculator. It's also flexible: you can change what's shown on the display &, for slower machines (say, an 8MHz Z80), you can run in minimal mode for speed. 3/7 Image

The fact that one is able to buy/sell #cryptocurrency is because someone mined it in the first place. This is what proof-of-work(#PoW) basically is. There would not be any proof-of-stake or proof-of-authority cryptocurrency models, had PoW not conceptualized in the first place.👇
Banning #mining means banning proof-of-work, which is the fundamental pillar behind generating all #cryptocurrencies. Many gamers in India use their computers to earn some pocket money through mining as well as #NFTgaming. For many, it is how they feed themselves.
