Saddened that I couldn't make it to Boston last week for @dmorey and @jessicagelman wonderful conference @SloanSportsConf. Thankfully, the videos from the conference are on YouTube. Here are three of my favorites that I recommend you catch:
Candid interview of Adam Silver of the @NBA by @BillSimmons. I am always super impressed by Silver. He is incredibly smart and handles tough questions better than anyone I have seen. And Simmons does a great interview.
Two super smart people, @Gladwell and @DavidEpstein, interview each other in a follow up to their interview 5 years ago. This was great. And @DavidEpstein also has a new book, Range, which he discusses.
Lastly, famed author Michael Lewis interviews one of my favorite people, @Coach_Leach, always contrarian, always unpredictable, always hilarious.

Seeing quite a bit of skeptical analysis of @Spotify business over the past few weeks. In light of IPO filing, there are also some great deep dives, including this great podcast from @benthompson, exponent.fm/episode-144-90… … Negative view highlights cash losses and label power.
I would offer the following in defense of Spotify. Can anyone name an alternate execution strategy that would have resulted in a higher equity value for the company? I would argue the answer is no. I think @eldsjal and company have basically optimized value creation.
Here is why: Had Spotify traded growth for profits, they would be marginally profitable, and have fewer users (and would be worth less). It is in Spotify's best interest to be bigger and bigger, and the low cost of capital makes this trade-off possible.

Let's start with the negotiation in Brussels where @Geoffrey_Cox is trying to secure enough changes to the backstop to change his legal advice that the Irish backstop is a potentially permanent trap.

@Geoffrey_Cox It's because he's struggling (and going to struggle) to get what the ERG wants: either a 'time-limit' or an 'exit mechanism' from the Irish backstop.

My understanding is that discussion is not on time limits, but on "elucidating" the exit-mechanism process/ 3

Just want to add: Chapo’s obviously not free now. It’s early, sorry...
Better said: his last week before he likely confronts a life sentence in a US federal prison.
A small hiccup has delayed deliberations.
As court convened this AM Judge Cogan held a sidebar to discuss an issue meant "to protect the integrity" of the jury.
Though the sidebar was sealed, it almost certainly related to the explosive allegations below.

(THREAD THAT WILL LAST ALL DAY) a few months ago @atlasobscura asked me to write about the Great Molasses Flood on the occasion of its centennial. i'm famously from Boston, and so is the flood -- a perfect match. so i said yes
if you aren't from Boston, or you're not familiar with this event, it was an industrial disaster. on January 15th, 1919, an enormous tank of molasses blew up and turned the North End into a scene of “brown syrup and blood,” as the Boston Post described it
i've been hearing about the flood my whole life, and like so many Boston things (pilgrims, revolutionary war, duck boats), it always had a kind of miasma of folksiness about it. i know by now that if you scrub off that sheen things get weirder and more interesting.

Week 2 CFB. Gonna go down the rotation and talk ACC and SEC:

GT @ USF (+3.5/63) Color me surprised by side and total here. Expected USF to be slight chalk but hasn't been the case. Total feels about a TD too high to me here but this is a very high variance game, IMO.
Not much to be gleaned from either team's Week 1 games against Elon and Alcorn State. I'll start with GT, I think they could be a candidate for improvement this year. I think the big upgrade was getting rid of Roof at DC and hiring Woody. Simplifying things is usually good.
Didnt' see GT week one but appears they are still trying to get Marshall to throw more and he's still throwing like the A-Back he played prior to QB. Earlier this week USF LB was asked about GT and he said, "Navy with athletes". Last time they played Navy, 52-45 win in 2016.
