Inslee kicking off the final day of #SWSW candidate sit downs
Inslee: "I call on every candidate to join me in ending the filibuster so we can deal with climate change."
Inslee refers to Iowa poll showing climate now tied with health care as top issue for Dems. "This is a wonderful thing."

Like AOC, Inslee says climate policy should be intersectional. "The first victims of climate change are marginalized communities. People of color."
Inslee has a higher-minded version of "lock her up," joking that Trump will one day be "removed from the White House and sent to perhaps a more secure facility."

Klobuchar says the comb incident was a "mom thing," where she had to "MacGyver" her way through the situation. Swisher: "There are a lot of sh*tty bosses. Why do you think this has stuck?"
Five minutes in, Klobuchar has a more specific policy answer than anything we heard from Shultz: Universal rural broadband by 2022. "Yes, we can be as good as Iceland."

Howard Schultz now onstage at #SXSW, reliving the first weeks of his exploratory bid. "I said I was considering running as a centrist independent outside the two-party system." No one applauds. Let's see how this goes.
Four minutes in, Schultz gets his first applause for: "The two-party system is broken, dysfunctional, and in need of great repair."
Schultz kind of backing down from his "un-American" line when asked about Warren/AOC/"partisans": "They love the country. They have their core beliefs. But you have to ask themselves, is any of this possible?"

THREAD| Draft of the #Climate Change Act, presented by (@bmu) this week: The proposal is a framework law, featuring elements from international acts, e.g. from UK (@theCCCuk). In contrast to the German Climate Action Plan 2050, it will be legally binding. #Klimaschutzgesetz
2| The framework law includes emission reduction targets, defines CO2 budgets for each sector, and clarifies responsibilities, as well as review, transparency & sanctioning mechanisms. Implementation measures for each sector will be detailled in 2030 programmes, due in Mar 2019.
3| Progress will be supported by an independent advisory group of 7 experts. Focus is on reaching the 2030 CO2 reduction targets, but the draft works towards at least 95% reduction by 2050. The remaining 5% to reach #netzero could be reached through compensation policies.

To motivate action, people need to:
1. notice an event
2. interpret the problem as an emergency
3. feel personal responsibility.
1. Notice event- barriers to notice #climatechange include:
Humans perceive emotionally, not rationally
Slow gradual threats seen as risky as fast, vivid ones
"villains" are easier to blame than nature
Living in cities, far from nature

One thing in the way of effective action on our #climate crisis (and our toxics crisis, our biodiversity crisis, our plastics in the ocean crisis, not to mention our violence, war, poverty, racism, & sexism crises) is a terrible misunderstanding of who/what we are.
Many people speak about this as a spiritual/moral crisis and I agree. But, the misunderstanding I want to talk about is at once simpler and more profound.
(Note - when I say 'we' I mean those of us acculturated into the western industrial growth mindset, which in evolutionarily relevant timescales has only been around for a fleeting instant. Humans haven't always thought this way, and not all humans alive today think this way.)

I was in my last year of high school in '97 and the Howard Government was campaigning and lobbying world leaders against an emerging climate change deal, as revealed by the 96/97 cabinet papers naa.gov.au/collection/exp…
Cabinet submissions and decisions on #climate change in the first 18 months of the Howard Govt are notable for not mentioning the impacts or consequences of climate change at all....

Just returned from Bangkok, where nations made little progress towards finalising the Paris agreement on climate change that aims to limit global temperature rises over the next 80 years.

It was my first @UN #climate change rodeo and there were a few things I wasn't aware of
Under Paris, countries agreed to a fairly detailed set of promises to keep global temperature rises under 2C by 2100.

It was the first time all nations - both developed and developing economies - signed up to the same set of climate rules. But they weren't binding
Parties gave themselves in effect 3 years to come up with a text agreed by everyone, ratified, and translated into national law on a state-by-state basis. The idea is the accord isn't legally binding, but the rulebook it provides could be on a national level

Short thread.
1. I didn't realize how badly Trump has eviscerated access to federal #climate data, so I went and looked at the USGS site.
2. In December, there were 5,932 climate science items linked there (9 were just pictures). Today there are 416 and 292 are just pictures.
3. In December 2016, 320 of those items were links to #climate data. Today, 0 links to data. 5,271 were web links. Now, 0 web links.
