John McDonnell, speaking at Bloomberg, says “it doesn’t seem to be the case” that a meaningful vote on the PM’s deal will be taking place this week as promised
McDonnell swipes at Philip Hammond for not taking a stronger stance against no-deal. “The position of Chancellor comes with responsibility... I think Philip Hammond has abdicated that role.” Adds that previous Chancellors like Gordon Brown, Ken Clarke wouldn’t have been so weak.
John McDonnell says his full opinions on Theresa May are “best not [said] in public” but adds that she combines “brutal complacency about what’s happening in society” with being “totally incompetent”

Layla Moran, Jo Swinson and Ed Davey are all expected to run for the Lib Dem leadership. Plugged-in LD tells me Moran should be considered favourite because she “can play the 'we need to move on and I wasn't a coalition minister' point powerfully.”

This next result is a big one. Cooper, Benn et al's plan to hand MPs the power to hold indicative votes if May cannot get a deal through next week.

Powell's amendment to this amendment lost by 3 votes. It's so tight. Might take a few gov resignations to get this through...
Benn, Cooper's plan to give MPs control over Brexit is defeated by 314 votes to 312

That potentially would have paved the way for indicative votes on Norway +, Labour's plan, a referendum etc to take place the week after next

Looks like Labour won't whip for Wollaston's referendum amendment, as per @jessicaelgot. The People's Vote campaign doesn't think it's a good idea, either.

A rare moment of unity.
The People's Vote campaign insists it is a "solution," not an "option" i.e it doesn't want to be in the mix with Norway+, Labour's alternative, etc.

"We do not think today is the right time to test the will of the House."

Its strategy is to be last choice standing.
Starmer confirms that Labour will *not* support Wollaston's referendum amendment and quotes the People's Vote campaign: "We do not think today is the right time"

Hey people, if you are on Twitter just for sport (i.e. just to waste time) and all you are doing is worrying about your follower counts, you need to get with it because there is a full on assault going on in our country. And it's not just happening at the Federal level. /1

A not-so-short thread which I hope simplifies a seemingly never-ending process but one which could have an abrupt end in less than 40 days. /1
Some context first: The key problem is the backstop - the Irish Protocol to us its proper name

It’s a section of the Withdrawal Agreement (WA) - a 585-page legal text which, together with a shorter Political Declaration (PD), forms the divorce treaty between UK & the EU. /2
The two texts - the WA & the PD - were the consequence of nearly two years of negotiations.

They were finalised + agreed by both the UK government (@10DowningStreet) and the EU (@EU_Commission) late last year. /3

Number 10 say that:

- next Tuesday’s vote on today’s motion will not be legally binding but will express will of House “this isn’t the meaningful vote or a substitute for the meaningful vote”
- if you ask me if it’s legally binding then the answer is No
Number 10 say a separate process for meaningful vote that the PM is pursuing in talks with MPs and then, essentially the Grieve process could be used to help build argument for new talks with EU which would then lead to a second meaningful vote.

My take - mid Feb. No recess.
Also “we will bring forward the meaningful vote when we believe we are in a position to get the support of Parliament”...

do not seem to be any plans to bring MV back this month.

I have no idea how they expect to get the actual Withdrawal Agreement Bill through before 29.3.

We are now going to see a concerted effort to tell MPs the outcome of the meaningful vote is either May's deal or a General Election. Liberal Democrat, Conservative, and Labour MPs will come under immense pressure to prevent a General Election, being told their seats are at risk.
Aside from threatening her own MPs, May will reach out to right wing Labour MPs who they know don't want a Corbyn Labour Government, to offset the loss of DUP votes. I expect at least 20 Labour MPs to defy the party whip and either vote for the deal or vote against no confidence.
In the media, pressure will be built on the premise that No Deal, not a General Election, is the only realistic and inevitable outcome of May losing the meaningful vote. And of course no-one but the DUP & ERG want No Deal. CBI et al already posting op eds to this effect.
