This makes me wonder about the term "technical". Plenty of marketing, tech writing, etc folks are technical enough to deeply understand the tech they are representing -- far more than the engineers they are talking to may understand it.I
Does "technical" just mean "capable of building it?". Because that would seem to rule out ops, test, design, and frankly most software engineers. 🤔
It's *almost* like "technical" is being used as a gatekeeper to exclude certain people from the conversation irrespective of their level of understanding or ability to contribute.

GOD YES. Vendor integrations engineering is some of the most delicate and highly skilled technical labor an engineer can do.
Good vendor engineering takes an immense amount of technical breadth, and a senior engineer's instincts for what *not* to do, what not to build.

It often looks like you haven't "done" anything at all. It just works. Disasters just don't happen.
You can almost tell how healthy an engineering org is by whether senior engineers or interns are handling two types of projects: deploy software and vendor integrations.

This should be a law of some kind, lol.

reminded by my last RT on "devrel as CTOs for the product" to say something I meant to say earlier this week, in response to the replies about my thread on giving women power in tech. particularly the replies about negotiating for salary.

when @lizthegrey was considering honeycomb and we started talking comp, she a) knew her worth, b) which was considerable, c) and she very calmly yet firmly let me know what level of impact she was looking to have on a company, and that she expected fair comp in return.
and it was so. fucking. refreshing.

i found myself looking back on that interaction and marveling in how easy it was, what a *relief* it was. there are all kinds of ways it could have not worked for her to join us -- sync and fit are especially tricky at high levels.

consultancy companies that builds web/mobile apps. After building so many of those found each had a separate stack, similar technologies, reused code. There was an inability to scale and if MVPs succeed, needed to rewrite to scale #ServerlessDaysBOS
