Some types of car will face import tariffs of 16 and 22% here too: gov.uk/government/pub…
Bumper business now expected for Irish VW, Volvo & BMW dealers etc because the Government have announced no tariff/customs checks on the Irish border
Anyway - this a £2.7bn price hike on the bulk of car imports - £1,500 average on each car, from hitherto tariff free Europe in just over a fortnight. Some car companies already telling car buyers they will have to add this if there’s a No Deal.
Fascinated to see how this will score fiscally? Has there been time? Will it score on OBR report today? Spring statement?
All of eg the top 10 cars sold in the year to date apart from the Qashqai, are not made in UK and now face a 10% hike in prices in a fortnight - some have already indicated charges levied if No Deal Brexit...
National Farmers Union boss Minette Batters: “it is appalling that we only now have this opportunity to [see the tariffs] - a fortnight before they could come into effect”...
Says only some sectors protected... not eggs cereal fruit - will lead to increased reliance on imports

Here is the message Kawczynski sent - quite the journey from last month suggesting going to Warsaw to get the Polish to veto any extension “if we continue to push we may lose Brexit

Well - @nickboles quits his local Conservatives after deselection threats over his efforts to prevent No Deal - says he will continue as MP and take Tory whip if “offered on acceptable terms”... but stand down at the end of his mandate...
Chief Whip tweets to say he stays a Tory MP - I think. Which means he would have to rejoin a different local Conservative association that doesn’t mind his role in stopping no deal...
Another cchq source confirms he remains a Tory MP and that the net effect of this is he has just preannounced he is not going to stand in next election...

But that also means that local associations have no leverage over MPs planning to stand down...

#WithdrawalAgreement In the Withdrawal Agreement, the UK agrees to develop a long term 'economic partnership' with the EU with a customs union similar to the EU-Turkey CU. That is, we would be forced to align our tariffs with EU tariffs. We would have no say in the negotiation of
new EU FTAs. The Commission would of course be negotiating on behalf of EU member states, not the UK. Moreover we would have no guarantee that the third country would agree an FTA with us also. It is the worse of all worlds.
The government is claiming that we will be able to strike our own trade deals in the future, but they are lying, so far as I can see. In the Northern Ireland Protocol preamble, the UK agrees to have as an objective for the 'future relationship'

UK Government has basically admitted that fresh food exports to the EU will cease after a no-deal Brexit until such a time as they manage to get "listed third party" status for UK. This little bombshell is buried on p.72 of the Brexit Partnership Pack.

The upper estimates of a UK trade deal with the US: GDP 0.35% higher by 2027.

The modelling assumes 100% tariff reduction and 25% of non-tariff barriers removed (32.5% in business/ICT, chemicals and cars).

Most of the economic gains estimated to come for non-tariff barrier (NTB) reduction.

As this was a TTIP estimate, it also assumes these barriers are reduced across the entire EU.

Gains of UK-US FTA now likely to be lower or net-negative b'cos deep US FTA requires hard Brexit.
So a UK-US FTA is largely a political objective, not an economic one. But this is true of most FTAs, which generally do little to increase GDP.

BTW, both documents are *deceptively* short - some of the boxes on the flowcharts hide a wealth of complexity (e.g. the requirement to "establish the origin of the goods", especially in the case of goods whose production involved more than one country). Get the aspirin ready...
