The problem with Christ-centered, gospel-centered lingo is that it can be easily evacuated of other essential beliefs and corollary beliefs which are necessary to defend the gospel.
Being gospel-centered can be a great way to let biblicism run rough shod over the implications of the gospel and the doctrines that are logically necessary for the gospel to be true.
Doctrines like the Trinity were developed from liturgical practices & formulas which were given to the church. The doctrine was developed from worship practices (lex orendi). In other words doctrines were developed a posteriori. We have a developmental view of doctrine.
We not only need a developmental view of doctrine that can arise from practice but the necessary handmaidens to theology that allow that necessary and good development to happen (philosophy, reason, history, etc.)
If we adopt revivalistic notions of “just preach the gospel,” we will never offer the necessary backdrop to the gospel or see how they relate. We won’t see the necessary concomitant beliefs that make such doctrine legible.
More importantly we won’t see how our ethical views and metaphysical views will be colored by the culture in which we live and necessarily become our operating principles of life. We also won’t be in any way heirs to the Reformation or the Protestant gospel as they defined it.
