Moments ago the Senate voted (once again) to cut off US support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen. We are inches away from a historic rebuke not just of Donald Trump but also of the belief that we can bring peace by waging war. 1/
Now, this legislation goes back to the Senate, where previously Republicans cynically used this bill to try and launch an attack on Democrats over antisemitism. You can see what happened by watching this amazing video from @jstreetdotorg 2/
House Democratic leaders should immediately put the Senate bill on the floor, where it will once again pass, and send it on to Trump's desk. Yes, Trump has promised to veto this, but the statement by Congress remains clear and overwhelming. 3/
And we should all understand that what will then happen is that Donald Trump will be vetoing the will of Congress to appease his close friend Crown Prince MBS. History is the story of choices and their consequences. Trump's about to face a big one. It shouldn't be a hard one. 4/
Above all what must not be lost is the suffering of the people of Yemen goes on. This bill, indeed no action in Washington, can end the war. What it takes is for those fighting to accept the simple truth the only solution is a political one. The war must end. #YemenCantWait 5/5

One of the most interesting and perhaps illuminating questions is why Trump cares so much about #Venezuela. According to this story, Trump requested a briefing on Venezuela on his 2nd day in office. To state the obvious, that's odd. Why did he care so much?
Another interesting question arises out of the story. We already knew there was a WH mtg earlier this week with Sens. Rubio, Scott, and Rep. Diaz-Balart to discuss the plan for what happened Wed. Turns out Wilbur Ross and Mnuchin were also there...

Really important to understand the 3 part crisis we're about to see unfold when Donald Trump claims a fake "emergency" and forces the military to build the wall. <thread>
1) This is a constitutional crisis, plain and simple. The constitution gives Congress solely the power to appropriate funds. They have done so and Trump is planning to unilaterally take those funds and use them for another purpose for his own political agenda. 2/
2) The President is about to make unprecedented use of emergency powers given to the Commander in Chief for times of true national crisis in order to enact his political agenda. If he can claim anything is a crisis to get what he wants, there is no meaningful balance of power. 3/

The measure was co-sponsored by Senator Bernie Sanders and the Utah Republican Mike Lee. Next, it will move to the Democratic-controlled House, where it is expected to pass. “The bottom line is that the United States should not be supporting a catastrophic war led by a despotic regime with an irresponsible foreign policy,” Sanders said on Wednesday from the Senate floor. He said a vote in favor of the measure would “begin the process of reclaiming our constitutional authority by ending United States involvement in a war that has not been authorized by Congress and is unconstitutional”.

Yemen is the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. Since 2015, the Saudi-led coalition, with U.S. arms, fuel, and tactical support, has been responsible for two-thirds of the civilian casualties in this conflict. theguardian.com/world/2016/sep…
Amal, age 7, was just one of the heartbreaking casualties of this war. She died of famine caused by the Saudi blockade on Yemen’s ports and its indiscriminate bombing of civilian sites, which drove up the cost of basic food items and made markets unsafe.

We all saw this coming when Trump bragged about his multi-hundred billion dollar arms deal with the Saudis, shortly after taking office.

I hate to say it, but the U.S. has sadly been complicit in what has been described as the world's worst humanitarian crisis in Yemen.
