There is a case to be made for just revoking Article 50 rather than holding a second referendum. If we have learnt nothing else from the last three years, it is blindingly obvious that those who want Brexit-at-any-cost will stop at nothing to get it.
So a PV would be so dirty as to make the first referendum sparkly clean and lemon-fresh by comparison. One consequence of that is that the "popular mood" really might get stirred up beyond fizzing point, especially if the result is very, very narrow again.
And it's fair to say that no policy has ever been pursued harder than Brexit, in terms of money, time and effort spent just trying to get it to the start line of the full negotiations to come. Sure, there have been many more expensive projects, but always for something in return.
But we're nearly 3 years, £4.2 billion and 11,000 civil servants into the process. Parliament is at a standstill - the normal business of Government is mired in the Brexit mud. So all the crucial stuff - the NHS, mental health, homelessness, etc. etc. - is falling by the wayside.
One route out of the impasse would be Remain+, i.e. revoke Article 50 and immediately unleash the pent-up funds the Chancellor has been prudently guarding for no-deal contingency. And go further. Start big bold projects, especially in the North and the regions.
So far, the people haven't seen a lick of benefit from Brexit, only cost and uncertainty. If it were cancelled and positive things immediately started happening, all over the country, it's easy to imagine the collective mood swinging back towards a semblance of normality.
In short: we gave Brexit a good old British try, straining every sinew, exerting every ounce of strength. We failed. Time to move onwards and upwards.
And what if it were coupled with the formation of a Government of National Unity, made up of the most pragmatic and sensible minds from across the HOC. They'd have 3 years to start rebuilding trust and fixing the UK. Could mark a turning point away from collective madness.
Could even set up a less dramatic version of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that was established in South Africa after the end of apartheid. Instead of pursuing people for their part in facilitating a disastrous Brexit, bring everyone together.
