Twelve Senate Republicans just voted against Trump’s most important issue, because he’s going down and they don’t want to go down with him. It’ll only take twenty Senate Republicans to override his veto. Also, it’ll only take twenty Senate Republicans to remove him from office.
I award these twelve Republican Senators no points for finally kneecapping Trump. They spent two years propping up this monster, and they’re only doing this now to insulate themselves. But this is how it works. Pelosi is just waiting for the number to go from twelve to twenty.
The people yelling “Republicans will never do anything about Trump” are not only wrong, they have no understanding of politics. OF COURSE the Senate Republicans will oust Trump if they conclude it’s in their own personal selfish self-interest. That’s how conservatism works.
The key for now is to watch how high the Senate Republican number climbs on the upcoming veto override vote. It’s gone from 4 to 12 in a a week, as the public turns more broadly against Trump. It could go from 12 to 20 by next week.
As a reminder, it was the Republicans who ultimately ousted Nixon, once they finally decided that they were selfishly better off by dumping m him than by continuing to prop him up. Pelosi is increasingly leaving the Republicans little choice but to insulate themselves from Trump.
Trump’s base is irrelevant to his fate. It’s always been about 1) his casual supporters who kinda like him but are growing weary, and 2) the nonpolitical people in the middle who don’t want to have to care either way, but are finally concluding they have to stand up against him.
The less popular Trump is in a given state, the quicker the GOP Senators from that state are going to turn against him. The more popular Trump is in a given state, the longer the GOP Senators from that state are going to stay with him. It‘s all about their reelection prospects.
This simply is how politics works. Always has, always will. You can acknowledge the realities here and plot your activism accordingly and help get rid of Trump, or you can just keep yelling things and get nowhere. It’s entirely up to you.
