In a couple hours Tesla will unveil to the would their first mass produced mid sized crossover. What does that mean and what kind or volume can we expect? Let’s dive in.

The luxury Mid Sized SUV and CUV market as been very healthy and growing. The Top 5 best seller in the 🇺🇸 in 2018 include the very successful Lexus RX which is offered in a 3 row and Hybrid variant. Model Y would need to reach 2200/wk to compete for top spot.

Tesla has often compared the mid sized Model 3 to the better selling Compact market, and judging by trade-ins Consumers are heading up market. So naturally we should look at the Luxury Compact SUV markets as well. Model Y would out sell the top 3 🇺🇸 at 4100/wk.

What the market didn’t realize with the Model 3, was that Tesla was a class leader not just in Luxury sales but mass market sales. The USA Mid size class leader is the Ford Explorer. Tesla Model y would need to be at 5230/wk to dethrone the Ford Explorer in the 🇺🇸.

If we then look at the Compact Class where we would expect many consumers to come from and trade-in. The 🇺🇸 Compact class leading Toyota RAV4 sets that threshold at 8550/wk.

This all assumes no ones loses sales volume. 2018 so far appears to have been peak Fossil sales. Compelling EV’s sedans killed the Sedan sales. And the Model 3 proved EV is here today.
