When you say "Why are we talking about X instead of Y?" you're talking about X, not Y. If you want to talk about Y, you don't need to talk about how other people are talking about X. Just ... talk about Y.
More generally, saying "stop focusing on this" is a piss-poor way of getting people to stop focusing on something, not least because it involves YOU focusing on that thing.
If you think it's horrifying that everyone you know is giving something oxygen, stop giving it oxygen. Be the change you want to see in the world.
Also: when you yell about the stupidity of the Twitter stupidity of the day on Twitter, people who agree with you will yell along with you, and then people who disagree with you will yell at you, and before you know it, you're sucked in.
Far more productive is to find someone who isn't on Twitter to vent about it, because you'll have to start off by spending ten minutes explaining the damn thing, and two minutes in you'll both be feeling embarrassed and bored.
You can't stop other people from being stupid on the internet, but you can stop YOU from being stupid on the internet. (It took me a very long time to learn this, and I still sometimes forget.)
And with that I'm going to go take a bath and read a book that's made out of paper.
One quick last thing, in response to a reply: I think the internet matters. I think what happens on Twitter matters a lot. But that doesn't mean that EVERYTHING that happens on Twitter matters.
