Hi! I have to research, condense, and explain all the California ballot initiatives for my job. Here is a tweet-per-prop thread-guide (finance snips all from ballotpedia):
Prop 1: Borrow $4 billion to build more affordable housing.
DID YOU KNOW: By the state's estimate, we actually have a SURPLUS of housing affordable to high-income people, but massive shortages of housing for everyone else. (The market only tends to build for the top.)
P2: Allows the state to re-direct some $ earmarked for mental health services to housing for people with mental disorders
WHO'S WHERE: The official no argument comes from *one* local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Statewide NAMI *supports* it.

Fun facts about what prop 13's contributed to our housing crisis, as Republicans celebrate its 40th anniversary (1/6)
1. It capped property taxes so low (at 1%) that it made building more housing a money-losing proposition for most local governments (because the taxes from the housing don't cover the services required by its residents)
2. That led local governments to back-fill their budgets with regressive sales taxes, court and jail fees that trap people in debt cycles after a brush with the law, and building permit fees that make new construction more expensive.

📣📣 2 common misconceptions in (fairly decent) coverage of our #housing report.
1. We are only talking about NEW homes not connecting to gas grid. This is technology-neutral
2. Heat pumps do not cost 25k. That's a cost of retrofitting to EPC A / zero carbon homes spec... (1/5)
... which as we state, in practice you'd probably just not do. It's a thought experiment to show the benefit of designing more efficient ultra-low energy bill homes from the start for ~5k. A one time opportunity not to miss. (2/5)
For existing homes, we call for a heat strategy within 3 years which deploys low- and no-regret options and develops key options for remaining gas heated buildings (3/5)

UK homes are not fit for the future. The Climate Change Act requires near-zero greenhouse gas emissions from homes by 2050 but efforts to reduce emissions have stalled. Most homes use fossil fuel heating; <500k have heat pumps or are connected to low-carbon heat networks. (2/10)
Today, 4.5m homes overheat in England, 1.8m people live in areas at significant risk of flooding and water consumption is higher than in other comparable countries. Risks are increasing due to climate change, but measures to adapt homes are not being taken up (3/10) #UKhousing

Hey, transportation planning friends and aficionados! I need your help (use this twitter thread) setting good goals for our city's mobility future.

We want getting around Austin to be more reliable, affordable, quick, safe, and just. How do we measure that?
The Council is going to vote (in March) on the Austin's Strategic Mobility Plan. One of the goals is a 50/50 mode split between single occupancy car trips to work and other options (walking, biking, transit, telecommunte). What do you think?
We'll include other goals that are measurable. Vehicle miles traveled per person per day (fewer is better), housing units and jobs per acre near transit (more means more transit riders), goals for amount of parking in areas w/ jobs and transit (more parking means less transit)

Hey New Yorkers. You know how everything good in New York seems to keep closing down and being replaced by chain stores and banks? It fucking sucks, and we’ve all started thinking it’s inevitable. It’s not inevitable....
...and it's not just "because people are shopping on the internet". It's happening because landlords are allowed to triple the rent on that beloved bar/restaurant/shop/theater you love.
When they can't pay we're left with a vacant storefront (take a look at the West Village right now, it's horrifying) or another Capital One branch that nobody wants or needs. Then we talk about how "New York is dying". Well here's something you can DO NOW:
