Y'all, I try not to name and shame books in public because when I do, it carries more weight than is reasonable, and that's not my job. I don't need some other author's posse rolling up on my Twitter because OH WE HEARD YOU WERE TALKING SHIT.
Please, please stop asking me to point a finger at one specific person when I mention a currently fairly endemic problem. It IS a problem, absolutely, but I am too damn tired to start a feud right now.
(Frankly, I'm always too damn tired to start a feud. I need a nap that lasts until, like, 2023.)

Something I wished we talked about more often: the unique challenges of learning how to lead a team as a new/young manager. Specifically in the context of tech. And also in the context of Nigeria/Ghana.
I'm 29. I've been responsible for teams for a little over 2.5 years. I've picked up a few things, but it's a process of trial/error and my early mistakes turn my stomach. I feel there're too few places new managers can go learn how to help teams do the best work of their lives.
In no particular order, here're some things I wish someone had told me 3 years ago.

1. There is a profound, important difference between being an individual contributor at a startup, and managing even one person

For #TransDayofRemembrance I want to tell you a story.

Last Nov/Dec, I was homeless. @realDonaldTrump had just been elected. I was living in my car. I was cold. I was hungry. The pain from my chronic lower back issues was horribly bad, every moment of every day (1/x)
Sleeping in my car was making it worse. I could barely stand, let alone go grocery shopping or walk longer than about 10 min, w/o being totally wiped out for the next day or 2. I was receiving no medical treatment for being #trans, for my #AtrialFibrillation or my back pain (2/x)
I was unemployed, had no degree, didn't pass, and I was severely depressed.

Only a few ppl know this, but I think it's time to talk about it. I almost died last December. I didn't have much $, but I was doing research on the best methods to kill myself that'd be effective (3/x)
