SPLC stokes fear of Trump because it is an extremely effective fundraising gimmick. In fiscal year 2017 they neared half a billion dollars in endowment, growing 35% from the year before. Credulous media continue to cite them as some authoritative source. weeklystandard.com/jeryl-bier/end…
SPLC is a powerful org but it’s not invincible. They retracted a list of anti-Muslim “extremists” that included critics of radical Islam like Maajid Nawaz after he sued them. They agreed to pay Nawaz $3.4m in a settlement. I hope more will sue. theatlantic.com/politics/archi…

As I looked into this latest rash of alleged hate hoaxes in Portland, I’m reminded of Azalea Cooley. In 1992, the disabled, black, lesbian, cancer-stricken woman brought the entire city of Portland together to condemn racism. (1/3)
Azalea’s home had been continuously vandalized w/swastikas, racist slurs, burnt crosses—even a black doll w/a bullet to its head was left there as a warning. She was also sent threatening letters. Even in 1992 progressive Portland was shocked & angered. (2/3)
Portland rallied against the hatred. However, a secret police investigation caught Azalea Cooley on video vandalizing her own home. When confronted, she admitted to faking it all: the cancer, the bald head, the wheelchair use, the racism. Everything. (3/3) wweek.com/portland/artic…

brazil has run-off voting & bolsonaro (whom i'll refer to as the fascist) did not reach 51%,so not ALL hope is lost. between the 1st round of the general election on sunday (which also was for senate, house, and governor) and the 2nd round, candidates have 3 weeks to campaign.+
the remaining candidates for the 2nd round of the presidential election are the fascist (whose problems i have gone into ad nauseum on this site & written about elsewhere and you can go searching for later) and fernando haddad, who represents PT (workers' party)+
