Pro-tip that will make I guarantee will make your job application better than 99% of other applicants:

Read any book on copywriting and apply it to your resume and cover letter.
By far, the biggest mistake I see in job applications is a complete failure to "enter the conversation going on in your prospect's mind" which is copywriting 101.

1/ Anytime you are buying a good or service, there is always information asymmetry between buyer and seller.
2/ The seller always knows the product better than the buyer, it's their job after all.
3/ When your business first engages with a prospect, you have to establish trust with them to overcome that asymmetry.

Been thinking about this lately more too: seems like lots of discovery now happening in semi-private enclaves. Wondering what it means for marketing?

One conclusion is that virality/Be So Good They Can't Ignore You becomes more important, but suspect there's much more to it

1. The nation has over $22 trillion in long-term debt. We have been engaged in “overseas ventures” (aka “small wars”) continuously for almost 20 years. The Chinese have been stealing our lunch for 40 years.
2. Obamacare was foisted on an unsuspecting public, resulting in skyrocketing premiums and loss of long-time general practitioners. And Congress has, in general, fought the implementation of the MAGA agenda for the past two years while spending much time “investigating” POTUS.
3. Congress fiddles; the country burns (apologies to the Emperor Nero and the historian Suetonious). And the only accountability that exists is to the voters although the reelection decks are stacked against outsider-challengers (~90% of incumbents win reelection!).

Ive been feeling pessimistic about marine conservation in 2018. Not only bc of bad actors (eg Trump) but also due to the duplicity, ignorance, and greed of marine scientists and conservation orgs. Some seem more interested in $ &/or recognition than actual biodiversity outcomes.
So to balance @ayanaeliza's wonderful piece about cons wins collectiv.in/SciAm08 here is a short list of some of our failures, followed by commentary on why I think they matter.
Up first has to be @TheOceanCleanup which as the @deepseanews team and many others predicted, did not actually capture any plastic. It did burn though tens of millions of cons $ and killed countless marine critters as @RebeccaRHelm pointed out. A #conservationfail of epic scale.

Here's a fun case of games getting HTML5'd out of existence, before anyone invented the term HTML5:

and it turns out this is because prior to 2004 when Apple invented <canvas>, generating graphics on the fly in JS was really annoyingly hard.

1. Seemingly, not a day goes by without some kind of horror being exposed in Academia. Whether it’s Antifa’s authoritarian suppression of conservative voices, an affirmative action-related scandal, the rampant gender politics, or something else.
2. Or the decline in academic standards, the suppression of teaching the history of Western civ, the insertion of Marxist American history textbooks (ala Howard Zinn) in public schools, and the general curtailing of academic freedom in pursuit of the Left’s agenda.
3. A really excellent discussion of “the ideology behind safe spaces, micro-aggressions, and trigger warnings” on college campuses was held at the Manhattan Institute in 2017. It shows how far things have deteriorated in Academia.

Here's a short list of key, NON-technical skills and trainings for CISOs and those who aspire to be a #CISO. Tech skills are important, but most #cybersecurity pros who reach senior positions will succeed or fail based on so-called "soft skills" (I hate that phrase). #CISOSkills
1. Management skills. When I interview manager candidates, I ask "What's your management framework?" There's no ONE right answer, but you should have SOME formal system for managing. My favorite is Situational #Leadership @sitlead_cls. Their multi-day training is 🔥🔥 #CISOSkills
Situational Leadership defines leadership as "influencing people". The model works in influencing up, down, & laterally. We put ALL our managers through this. Their 360 process will show you how your leadership style is perceived by coworkers and direct reports. #CISOSkills
