having a read through of the EU Copyright Directive questionnaire on the into net, worth reading yourself
europa.eu/rapid/press-re…
I had to copy and paste it into Word for a serif font so I can read it easier, but I am a bit confused as to what the big deal is
this seems good too
so actually, it's fine, and in fact is finer than it has been before
this big amount of text also means I have an easy bit of excerpt to use to practice my RP accent
this is pretty cool, text and data mining for commercial (think ads) vs scientific research collection uses is now distinguished formally in the law

also means you can use copyrighted works cross-border for educational purposes. sounds important for arts and humanities
oh this is very very good. there's a new system for if you want to obtain "abandoned" copyright works

I hope that this covers video games too!! video game archivers have been fighting uphill battles trying to preserve old video games
somethingsomething favourite show not on netflix
a link again, since I skipped over a few of the sections, and it's worth taking it all in europa.eu/rapid/press-re…
to summarise what I have read:

- copyright exceptions for fair use are now MANDATORY in all EU nations. previously, these exceptions were not required

- so in fact, with the Directive, it is more legal to make memes and parody videos than ever
- AI content filters are not mandated in any part of the Directive. in their words, "the 'best effort' obligation does not prescribe any specific means or technology'

- this doesn't stop websites like YouTube from using these stupid filters, but attacking the EUCD doesn't help
- enforcement of new procedures that will allow for easier disputing of unjust removals of content, like false YouTube takedowns

- HEY ISN'T THIS WHAT YOU WANTED
- better opportunities for those who wish to archive and preserve historic copyrighted work, with a whole new license out there for works that are still copyrighted but commercially unavailable

- my hope is that this will help the preservation of video games through emulation
- news aggregators (like Google News) are mostly going to be targeted by the new Directive's laws. users don't fall in its sights

- you can link that news article you found onto Reddit it's fine
- copyright exemptions for those looking to research/educate but I guess that's not important to internet reactionaries
- THEY'RE NOOOOOOT
- TAAAAAKING
- YOUR MEEEEEMES
- AWAAAAAAY
do I think the new laws are perfect? probably not, we still have to wait to see how each member state enforces these

but this seems like an overall good step in the right direction, esp in contrast with the US' approach of "all these new things are scary. don't touch it"
laws, especially copyright, need to evolve and change. more importantly, we have to be good about making sure we comprehend these new laws

Europeans, and North Americans, are among the privileged few to participate in formal democracies. you may as well take advantage of it
do also note that the approach of European law differs from that of the UK and America

in the UK and US, copyright is about an OWNER (not creator) extracting profit from owned content

in the EU, it's centred around the ability of a creator to monetise

(thanks, @kroati1)
attempting to presume that the American and UK approach to copyright is the same as the one that the EU applies is a misstep, presumably why a lot of companies that lobbied against it are actually American-based
so again for those in the back

🇬🇧 THEY'RE NOT TAKING YOUR FAIR USE* AWAY
🇫🇷 ILS NE VONT PAS PRENDRE VOTRE FAIR USE*
🇩🇪 SIE WERDEN UNSERE MEMES NICHT NEHMEN
🇪🇸 NO NOS QUITARAN EL USO JUSTO*
🇺🇸 FAIR USE* NOT GO AWAY

(thanks @DeltVar @newNike1155)
* do note that fair use law is more or less specific to the US/North America so I use this term fairly loosely anyway stop falling into the hands of white nationalist rhetoric who are only in this because Countries Working Together On Things In Not Neolibertarian Ways Is Bad
that's enough from me I guess

I should get something to eat
