The data protection adequacy decision is technically separate from the EU/Japan free trade agreement that comes into force next week, but is implicitly linked to it politically - and note that it's reciprocal, data flows in both directions are simplified -
Compare to Brexit
Under the withdrawal agreement EU data protection law still applies to UK during transition period, & an adequacy decision process would be started.
