When it comes to the environment, workers' rights, human rights, food standards etc. do you trust the current UK Government *and all future UK Governments* to always look out for the best interests of the UK more than the EU does?
Once we leave, nobody's watching the watchmen. We will set our own environmental standards, oversee our own food standards, with our own monitoring and compliance bodies. Right now, EU law sets a minimum "floor" below which the UK cannot go.
We can aim higher than that floor, of course - the EU sets minimum not maximum standards. But we can't erode things below that safety net. Outside the EU, we're putting 100% faith in our Government never to bow to outside interests and whittle away at our protections.
If that sounds just fine and dandy to you, well OK. On the other hand, if that sounds highly alarming, there's still time to do something about it. Sign the "revoke A50" petition. Write to, email or doorstep your MP. Call radio shows. Write to the papers. But do *something*.
Because the alternative could be to go back to the bad days of air that stains your snot black, and beaches where the floaters aren't people on lilos and inflatables. That's if you even get to go to the beach once the gloves are off on workers' rights...
Like so many things about the EU, this has long been misunderstood. They don't tell us "exactly what to do", they merely tell us "you can't behave worse than X". Sounds pretty good when framed correctly, don't you think?
