Margaret Beckett's motion M (Confirmatory public vote) could have been won last night, were it not for 27 Labour MPs voting against and 18 abstaining. Just 14 of the 27 voting the other way would have done it. We always knew it would be Labour dependent. commonsvotes.digiminster.com/Divisions/Deta…
Here's the breakdown of the 27 and 18 MPs in question...
It's a classic "you had *one* job" situation. And they fluffed it on the night. Can you even begin to imagine the conversations (and headlines) if it had attained a majority?!
I don't care if you have posters of Jeremy Corbyn on your wall, and exclusively eat jam from his allotment. We may not be able to lay the whole Brexit mess at his feet. But this one *is* on him. His messianic-level equivocation directly brought us to this failure.
And if you're argument is "but they were whipped", well, it didn't work. Why didn't it work? Because Labour basically stopped enforcing sanctions on rebels in the last couple of weeks, so they knew they could get away with it.
When the future history of Brexit is written, and you say "ah, but what could Labour have done?" This. They could - and should - have done this.

(Don't try to put into my mouth an argument I'm not making. I am not saying "Brexit is all Labour's fault." But this is.)
And we haven't even started on Joanna Cherry's amendment to make revoke the last resort rather than no-deal. That one lost by 109 votes, with 110 Labour abstentions. (Labour officially recommended abstention, but did not whip for it.)
