I want people to understand the predatory and cultic aspects of #ABA therapy. I'm not joking, #ABAisaCult. I'm writing a book about this and I want to share a basic information thread here. I'll start writing when I go inside after smoking.
1/ Several months ago, I first learned about something called the BITE Model, a model of extreme social control. It is an acronym for Behavioral, Information, Thought, and Emotional Control. ABA, as a therapy and a culture, does all of these things.

A few days ago, I worked with our fab training team. I asked the audience of some 40 healthcare & related professionals whether any of them would have guessed I'm autistic. All said no, they would never have guessed.

What does #autistic #masking involve?
We get a lot of people who think it means we have 'mild' autism (whatever that is...). That ours isn't noticeable, (when we're with them...) so therefore is irrelevant.
Error. We have good research showing that those who mask are at risk/
The risk of #autistic #masking is around the strain on us. Research shows that it is linked to a raise in suicide risk, for example, and a raise in PTSD levels. The long term strain of having to disguise autism, to avoid punishment, ostracism, bullying, etc. Not good. /

When you apply for the job PLEASE address the values in your cover letter. It’s an essential requirement that you have a commitment to these values.

The one autism & parenting approach I want folks to absorb for 2019: if your #autistic child is violent or aggressive then that usually means something is really really wrong with them, health or environment-wise, and you really need to figure out what it is—for everyone’s sake.
It can be really, really hard to figure out the source of an autistic kid’s (or adult’s) extreme distress. But you know what makes it harder? People assuming aggression is "because of autism,” & not because something is wrong. And then so much avoidable suffering happens.
This is why you don’t want to listen to #autism “experts" who recommend “extinction,” punishments or aversives for kids who are aggressive, without even bothering to figure out why they might be in pain or other distress—because that is ignoring/punishing someone who needs help.

#ActuallyAutistic people, like myself and many others, are spoken for - a lot. We often find ourselves without the ability to speak freely.

Not because of our own difficulties, but because we are spoken over. And ignored.

This can be small-scale, like at home...
...or large scale. Like providing a platform for people who aren't autistic to talk about autism.

I'm also bisexual. You wouldn't invite a straight person to talk about LGBT+ stuff, would you?

Things that YOU can do to help #autistic children in school. A thread of ideas, titbits of info, things to consider and so on. I hope it's useful and even more importantly, hope it helps some kids cope with the waking nightmare that is 'Neuro-typical Academy' #autismacceptance /1
1. Have your lesson stick to a rigid routine as far as possible. This is good as it arguably is good for all kids, but is a huge benefit to #autistic student. At primary, have a clear daily routine if possible. /1
2. Only have posters and displays if they are actually useful, and don't make them too 'busy'! Simple colour schemes too, rather than rainbows, and if may be worth seating #autistic children away from particularly distracting or detailed displays. /2
