The most malicious story in the whole 'Collusion' saga is that Assange had "secret meetings with Paul Manafort"--which the Guardian sourced to Ecuadorian intelligence. The president of Ecuador, Lenin Moreno then tried to bolster this fake story on CNN, claiming (1/2)
that Ecuadorian confederates of Assange may have prevented records of the visit appearing. The fake story was then used as legal justification for the FBI to formally interrogate Ecuadorian diplomats (despite their immunity) in Ecuador and UK about Assange, in general, this year.
What was the real purpose of this plot? Who were the plotters? What was the payoff?
