The two most remarkable things this week:

1) The media’s weak response to the most blatant coverup attempt since the crescendo of Watergate

2) The public’s utterly unchanged opinion about Trump and his guilt

I’m equally shocked by each of those.

1/
We are in the midst of the most dangerous test of the rule of law since Comey was fired and the media is largely either asleep, indifferent, unaware or complicit.

“Trump Admin Launches Effort to Bury Mueller Findings”

That is the headline.

THAT IS THE HEADLINE.

2/
On a scale of 1 to 10, my personal worried-about-our-democracy meter hit an 11 on Monday.

The media’s complete failure to frame a transparent coverup attempt as just that was a big part of that spike.

The media needs to be held to task. Respond to every bad take. Push back.

3/
If we don’t aggressively demand the media accurately cover this unfolding story, the likelihood that Trump will get away with it will go up dramatically.

If he does, buckle up. Far worse things will follow.

We can fight now or suffer greatly later.

4/
While this may seem tedious, respond every single time you see a news story:

1) Confuse a memo written by a political appointee with Mueller’s actual report

2) Cite Barr’s claims as if they are established facts. They are not. Nothing in the memo has been, as yet, proven true
3) Refer to the Mueller investigation as complete or finished.

It will not be over until it’s complete findings are made public and Mueller has been given a chance to explain them to the American public.

6/
4) Suggest Dems should be moving on or pivoting away to other topics

Trump and his administration are trying to destroy the ability to hold him accountable for anything he does.

That is our most serious and pressing problem. It will remain so until it is fixed.

7/
Respond to every damn story. Ratio every damn post.

At this moment, we’ve been granted a tiny reprieve. People didn’t buy Barr’s spin.

If the media is allowed to repeat all of the above errors endlessly, they will become indoctrinated in people’s minds as the truth.

8/
Authoritarians gain power, in part, by endlessly repeating subtle, foundational lies until they’re accepted as true.

- The Mueller investigation isn’t complete
- We know nothing about its findings
- A coverup attempt is underway.

Those are the facts. Defend them.
