I'm trying to understand @UKLabour's position on the people's vote. Would welcome others' thoughts. A short (honest) thread. 1/
First, the leadership. If they get what they want - a good deal - they see no need for a PV. If they do not get what they want - ie if it is bad deal - they would back a PV. 2/
Many other MPs, and many members, take a different view. They say that it is important that *any* Brexit deal which passes through Parliament is ratified by a PV. 3/
This suggests that Labour would be united in supporting a bad deal, on the basis that it is subject to a PV. They would support any deal (even the WA), if it is subject to a PV (indeed, this is Kyle/Wilson). 4/
But that there may be divisions within the Party in relation to a Brexit deal which the leadership judges to be 'good'. In that case, the leadership would support even absent a PV, while the others would still want a PV. 5/
Is that right? If so, it is a long way from the sort of position I would advocate. That would involve rejecting a 'bad deal', even if it comes with a PV; and instead calling to revoke A50 on the grounds that there is no 'good' basis for Brexit. 6/
I would support a ratification referendum *but only if* a deal is passed which can command HoC support. I find it curious how easy MPs seem to find it to support a 'bad' outcome, in the hope that it will then be rejected by the people. 7/7
