A new (to me, at least) way of thinking about the Brexit divide: the country is divided not only between 'leavers' and 'remainers', but also between those who want to get Brexit done; and those who think that we need more time in order to get Brexit right. 1/7
There are, it seems to me, some strange alliances/coalitions which are forming when the 'next steps' are considered from this perspective. 2/7
Those who want to get Brexit done fall into several camps. They may support no deal, the PM's deal, a people's vote, or revoking A50. They are not interested in seeking to find a 'better' Brexit. They want a resolution. 3/7
Admittedly, people's vote supporters need an extension; but the extension is to enable a Brexit deal (for most, the WA will do) to be put to the people, to enable a decisive choice between remain and a concrete version of leave. 4/7
Those who want to get Brexit right, see that there is no version of Brexit which commands sufficient support, and are determined to strive to find a version which does. They may support changes to the backstop, Common Market 2.0, a permanent customs union, etc. 5/7
They embrace indicative votes, and are in favour of a long extension in order to find a better path forward. Many see the potential in a Tory leadership election, or a general election, to help to unblock the impasse. 6/7
This divide is going to be crucial in the days and weeks (possibly years...) ahead. We need to decide whether it is worth pursuing a better Brexit, or whether we can, at this point, choose between the available options. 7/7
PS: Worth adding, that many of those who want to get it ‘done’ quickly, are destined to be disappointed, even if they get their preferred outcome.
The Brexit debate will not end with no deal, with the WA (bring on FR talks), or with revoke (perhaps via a PV). The task of navigating divisions, and fixing our broken political system, will loom very large.
