A good point. However, it took years of fighting for people to accept that the earth revolves around the sun because the opposite argument was a source of power for some (ex: the church).
Similarly, gov't control of the economy is a source of power for those advocating for it.

Freedom is not a natural state for humanity. For most of history, a few have had control over the many. Those who want control constantly argue for us to revert to that natural state, and they almost always argue that push is to benefit us and for our own good. 
But it is telling that the same people that run around accusing others of being anti-science (mostly for disagreeing with their policy proposals) are also rejecting/avoiding established facts about economics and history to argue for their policy preferences.
