As we continue the long, slow crawl through October Daye, I give you CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT, aka, "Toby has a really lousy day, and hates politics more than she ever thought possible." I knew this book was coming from the beginning, but it was still a shock to the status quo.
The biggest change from conception to execution: originally, Arden was going to be hanging out in the local SCA community, not selling books at @borderlands_sf. I asked permission before including the bookstore, and before including the bookstore cat, Ripley, who had passed away.
In Toby's world, Ripley is going to live as close to forever as the series can encompass, because fiction gives our dearest ones a soft place to rest.
It turned out there was a long-standing challenge: the first person to work Borderlands into a published book would get taken out for a very nice dinner by the store's owner, Alan. I didn't know about it. Yay, free dinner!
