As the Champions League and Europa League reach the quarter-final stage, I took a quick look at the latest available revenue and wages data for those clubs still in the competition. Some brief comparisons in the following thread.
Three clubs in the Champions League quarter-finals have over half a billion pounds revenue, led by Barcelona £612m, followed by the two Manchester clubs, #MUFC £590m and #MCFC £500m. Other English clubs: #LFC £455m and #THFC £379m. Lowest revenue by far at Ajax £81m & Porto £94m.
Barcelona £431m have by far the highest wage bill (even after excluding other sports), followed by #MUFC £296m. #LFC £264m and #MCFC £260m are closely matched, way ahead of the other English club #THFC £148m. Porto and Ajax only £75m and £47m respectively.
The English clubs have by far the highest revenue in the Europa League: #CFC £448m & #AFC £389m. Then a large gap of more than £200m to Napoli £162m, followed by Benfica £133m and Eintracht Frankfurt £103m. The two Spanish clubs, Valencia and Villarreal, are both below £100m.
It’s a similar story with Europa League wage bills, as the largest by some distance are again #CFC £244m and #AFC £223m, who pay more than twice as much as the closest challenger, Napoli £105m, followed by Valencia £77m, Benfica £60m, Villarreal £59m & Eintracht Frankfurt £45m.
Obviously, money isn’t everything, but success on the pitch usually correlates pretty well with revenue and wages. We shall soon see whether that is again reflected in this season’s Champions League and Europa League.
