First lab meeting for the quarter and we tried something new: I asked my UG students: "What does it take to be a successful researcher? i.e. What do you want to learn?" Here's what they said:
More background knowledge from PI. They had never seen me give a talk summarizing what we do in the lab, despite me giving these talks at other institutions! #whatdowedohere
Data management. Online tools, archiving, and versioning, but more importantly let's write out better instructions for lab newcomers. #onboarding
The Lab Notebook. Just how much detail should you write and what goes in it? This varies widely by discipline, so I'll be bringing some old ecology lab/field notebooks to show examples! #IllTakeSavedMyButtFor800Alex
Conference navigation. How to choose which conferences to attend, how to fund them, when to present versus when to just attend? #flyawayfledglings
Networking in Science. How you do you approach emailing prospective employers and/or grad school advisors? Who can you cold email and who can you not? #suchgoodquestions
Other more traditional topics we have discussed in the past came up too: poster presentations, scientific writing process, scientific writing structure, CVs/resumes, grant writing. My suggestion (data analysis) was deemed not necessary 🤣and I agree! #researchskills
The students prioritized and came up with a schedule for the quarter. We'll be tackling these topics over the quarter in addition to sharing research progress. I'm SO proud of my brilliant students for generating this list!! #ChaudharyLab #researchskills #hiddensyllabus
