According to diplomatic sources privately briefed on the president’s thinking thinking, Macron wants quarterly checks to confirm the extension, with the possibility of cutting the extension short if the UK isn’t respecting its commitments
The French president also wants the 26 other leaders to firmly commit to sticking to whatever position they end up collectively agreeing to at Wednesday’s EUCO, and not dither further down the line
You could call it a flextension à la Française.

A belated thought on the Spanish election: the VOX result is for obvious historical reasons significant. But looking at where the party did well, it seems to be mostly, for now at least, an important subset of PP electorate. So, different to far-right elsewhere in Europe
In other words, big parties in Spain and elsewhere, which are in effect broad coalitions, are struggling to keep their contradictions together as debates and issues become increasingly polarised and all too often binary
Finally, although there is no way to be 100% immune to these trends, it is worth noting that those leaders who have stood up and fought for more moderate/centrist views and values have often performed better than those that have instead pandered to the fringes

70% of the vote counted in Spain:

PSOE 29.3% (123 seats)
PP 16.7% (65)
Cs 15.4% (57)
Podemos 11.9% (35)
Vox 10.1% (23)
ERC 3.8% (15)
Some initial thoughts:

- fragmentation continues define many EU countries' politics
- good result for PSOE. The death of social democrats seems to have been greatly exaggerated..
- terrible result for PP (copying the far-right rarely works)
- VOX result is important. The far-right party barely registered in 2016
- forming a gov't will be difficult. If C's don't shift on working with PSOE, Sánchez will need the support of regional parties.

Meanwhile, in Italy: Last night at a rally, Salvini said Europe needs rescuing now or it will become an Islamic caliphate.

Today, he asked children on stage at another rally, and said he wanted these children in Italy not prepackaged migrant ones that arrive on boats.
Salvini also said that he was against "substituting populations". (a far-right trope and conspiracy theory)

His far-right Lega party is polling on nearly 35% in the run up to the European Parliamentary elections.

What's extraordinary about Salvini's popularity is that Italy's economy is doing dreadfully, its influence in Europe and the wider world is waning, and his gov't has done little that resembles serious reforms, yet his propaganda continues to work.

Emmanuel Macron, speaking at the UN General Assembly says that the Westphalian system of nation-states, aka nationalism, failed. He warns against a return to this discredited unilateral model which led to so much bloodshed.
Macron warns that the current environment is not a blip. Things are not about to go back to normal. There is a crisis of the entire international system, and this is a moment of profound danger.
Macron: "After the second world war, for several decades, we saw a balance that was based on blocs. Then there was the emergence of superpowers. For several years now we've seen new global instability characterised by multiple centers of power."

1) Megathread - Yes, the #Brexit vote is illegitimate, and it's not elitist to say so

Simply put, a vote that is based on misconceptions and illusions but which *cannot* be reversed is an affront to democracy therefore the very concept of the referendum is illegitimate
2) So why was the #Brexit vote illegitimate? Well, broadly speaking:
1) The Brexit we "voted for" ends FoM, the ECJ & payments to EU
2) This will be severely damaging to the economy & jobs
3) If the public was asked today the same question but were told the above,Remain would win
3) Leave simply would not win if the costs of the #Brexit they promised were revealed honestly in a second referendum. The only way they could win is if these costs were obscured again

THREAD (1) When the likes of Hannan feel the need to 'brush off' something so critical to the right-wing/neo-con #Brexit wet dream, we find digging a little deeper to be useful. After all, ground breaking 'shadow trade deals' with right-wing US think tanks is no small fish.
(2) In fact, given the growing negativity surrounding the #Brexit negotiations, compounded by the Govts' own damning economic analysis, one would have thought Hannan and Fox et al, would be shouting from the roof tops about their bespoke 'shadow US-UK trade deal.' Wouldn't you?
(3) The problem for our intrepid trade deal making duo, as almost always, is to be found in the detail; just what are, and who is, behind these neo-con US think tanks? Perhaps Daniel would enlighten us?

1) Thread - All Brexits are bad and what we voted for
It's often said by brexiters that "it's not all about economics"
However, the *actual* Leave campaign was almost wholly about economic arguments

With the leak of this 2-8% report those arguments are now trashed
2) We seem to have forgotten this however economics played a huge part in the Vote Leave campaign, making up over 2/3rds of the primary arguements. The clear message was we would at the least be no worse off and at best much better off. 4 of the 6 below state this clearly
3) & the fact is voters believed we would be no worse off. People prioritized immigration certainly, but against a backdrop of there being no consequences from Brexit - few are prepared to actually pay for ending FoM
