Going around the table predicting the future in space. Rob Mueller, technical lead of @NASA @SwampWorks_KSC, predits the asteroid belt will be the solar system's industrial park, Earth will be a nature preserve so humans live on a more beautiful planet.
Brian Wilcox, roboticist of @NASAJPL, predicts humans will hollow out a large Carbonaceous asteroid and will it with a breathable atmosphere to make a "Rendezvous with Rama"-type world in space.
Brent Sherwood, space architect at @NASAJPL, believes space tourism will be the primary commercial motive in space. He believes advances in AI make it impossible to predict what else will happen after a couple decades.

I just want to put out there, that there will still be science that comes from the #Beresheet's mission to the surface. It may be little consolation this soon since it's not the science we wanted, but the way the lander hit the surface will tell things about the regolith... /1
2/3 We will see how the texture of the soil is affected, and the thermal properties of the ejecta. These are important for science. We will also learn physics about regolith dynamics in low gravity, relevant to secondary cratering to understand the overall history of the Moon.
3/3 Also, we'll study the extent of ejecta from crash dynamics. This will help mission planning. We always worry about crashiing near an outpost when planning how far away to land. I did some of this analysis during Constellation. We need more data; Beresheet will provide it.

But this is why we put into the NASA Guidelines to approach the historic sites tangentially along a 2 km perpendicular distance. Crashes will always be >2 km away, & the faster you crash the farther you will inevitably be from the site. If 2 km isn't enough, we can revise... 1/N
2/ ...because we planned for the NASA Guidelines to be a living document we will continually revise as we get smarter. (I picked the 2 km requirement based on analysis of lunar crash dynamics.) There is a process of approving a mission to visit an Apollo sites. It is like this...
3/ For US-based organizations, the FAA reviews the launch plans. If they see it will land on the Moon, they ask NASA to review the mission plans. If NASA sees the plans will threaten the historic sites, NASA advises the FAA to deny the launch license, so the FAA will deny it...

Last night we had a vergence of 4 people who helped discover lunar soil simulant BP-1, the 100s of tons of regolith at NASA's Robotic Mining Competition and @SwampWorks_KSC. The story starts with Brian Wilcox of JPL at the Desert RATS field test. (Picture courtesy Scott Howe.)1/N
2/ In the picture you see Brian is dusty up to the hip. That's because he was walking on a gray mountain of dust, but the surface collapsed and he sunk in. He says he was lucky he didn't go in over his head and suffocate. He couldn't get free, so he called for help.
3/ People rescued him (and took the picture). Moonwalker Jack Schmitt was nearby and came to check out the weird gray hill that could support your weight but occasionally collapse so you sink in. Jack played with it and commented "wow, this stuff behaves a lot like lunar soil!"

So, the time has come. Everything is in place. Saturn can't dodge now.

65 million years ago (give or take) something hit the Earth with enough energy to have global consequences. Maybe comet, probably asteroid.
It wiped out many species extant at the time. Including the non-avian dinosaurs.
