Today, #OilMoneyMitch @senatemajldr brought the #GreenNewDeal to a vote in the Senate. Once more, McConnell prioritized his fossil fuel campaign donors over the American people--who overwhelmingly support the GND. @SenateDems showed him they weren’t falling for his tricks.
@senatemajldr @SenateDems The votes officially fell against the resolution because Democrats voted “present.” Both GND supporters and skeptics see that real leadership in 2019 means having a plan to protect life on Earth as we know it, not jamming through unfinished legislation to score political points.
.@AOC and @SenMarkey catalyzed the conversation about the catastrophic climate change and rising inequality that threaten all Americans. Now, thanks to our movement and our allies, a growing number of our country’s lawmakers are going on the offense for bold climate solutions.

.@SenJohnBarrasso is a millionaire who has built his political career on the backs of working people. He has a lifetime voting record of 11% from the AFL-CIO and is no friend to labor. Don't fall for his tricks here.

Our statement responding to the letter in thread:
This letter is not an official position of the AFL-CIO or its 55 member unions; it is a letter from ten unions on its energy committee. Barrasso is misrepresenting it to sow mistrust. This is a classic strategy of dividing the people so the wealthy elites can keep robbing us all.
The truth is that union leaders, shop stewards & workers across the country are excited about the Green New Deal framework b/c it busts the "jobs vs. environment" myth once and for all. The GND will create millions of good-paying, union jobs + stop catastrophic climate change.

1. The price on carbon should be far larger than zero.
2. A carbon price alone is not an ideal climate policy.
3. Some policies fit better alongside a carbon price than others.

Even on twitter, these are uncontroversial, right?
…And they naturally lead to the questions: which new policies should be added when a carbon tax is implemented, and what existing policies should be changed or eliminated?

1. National Emergency Shame!
I don't know if President Trump would declare national emergency, as news reports suggest, in order to reallocate a few billion dollars from a gargantuan federal budget toward funding the remaining portion of the border wall/barrier.
2. But if he does, it would be a shame, the blame for which at this point fairly and squarely falls on Nancy Pelosi and her team for being unreasonably obdurate on a measly $4 billion funding for what is clearly a high priority for the President and tens of millions of Americans.
3. Democrats, liberal media sages, and NeverTrumpers hyperventilating over this presidential move should explain why they didn't utter a peep when Obama reallocated hundreds of millions of dollars toward a UN Green Fund without any discussion and without Congressional approval.

I commend @AOC, @EdMarkey & #GreenNewDeal co-sponsors for putting the urgent need to confront #climatechange with an ambitious clean energy mobilization on the top of the political agenda. This is an urgent threat. Confronting it is a real opportunity for economic renewal.

In late 1990s, Bill Clinton signed into law the “Faircloth Limit,” which creates a hard CAP on the number of public housing units that can exist in the US.
The “Faircloth Limit” is named after the same one-term Senator that wanted to prevent unwed moms from getting welfare.

This man’s repressive housing law is STILL on the books.

@Ocasio2018 recognizes that the #GreenNewDeal and federal #JobGuarantee are two distinct but intimately connected goals. Saving the planet goes hand-in-hand with providing economic opportunities & good jobs for ALL.
We need urgent mass mobilization to transition to a Green Future, and it's important to remember that the #JobGuarantee is the only policy that ensures that there will be good jobs for all who want them in this process.
The #JobGuarantee doesn't turn anyone who needs work away. It also establishes a labor standard--a benchmark for wages, benefits, working conditions all employers in the economy must meet.

2. “Nuclear energy,” write IPCC authors, “can increase the risks of proliferation, have negative environmental effects (e.g., for water use), and have mixed effects for human health when replacing fossil fuels.”
3. In fact, study after study over the last 40 years finds that nuclear is the safest way to make reliable electricity, and climate scientists found that nuclear energy has saved 1.8 million lives by preventing premature deaths from air pollution.
