PWDA is very concerned about comments made by the Hon. Peter Dutton MP in the Australian today that demonstrate a lack of understanding about the routine discrimination faced by people with #disability in securing accessible and appropriate housing. [1/6]

The low supply of #AccessibleHousing makes it much harder for people with disability to live where we want to.

PWDA has been calling for equal access to housing for many years, including in our 2019 Pre-Budget Submission to the Government: pwd.org.au/pbs-2019/

[2/6]
Our submission highlights that the Australian Government needs to make accessibility features mandatory in all new housing, through amendments to the National Construction Code, along with implementing other measures to increase the supply of #AccessibleHousing. [3/6]
Meanwhile, this issue was conspicuously absent from the recent Federal Budget, and the government has made no response to our recommendations (which, again, you can find here: pwd.org.au/pbs-2019/) [4/6]
Peter Dutton, as a senior Cabinet Minister, should be better informed about the reality of available accessible housing stock, which is a chronic problem for #PeopleWithDisability everywhere in Australia. [5/6]
It would be more appropriate for Mr. Dutton and the Government to recognise inaccessible housing as an issue of discrimination and take strong steps to rectify this for people with disability. [6/6]
