The House Ways & Means committee was just called to order. There are only two bills on the agenda today.

One of them would require school district voted discretionary operating property tax levies to apply proportionately to charter schools.

The notable thing about the south’s segregation academies isn’t the racial segregation which you could and can find all across the United States. It’s that taxpayer dollars financed them. And that the financial drain decimated schools educating Black children.
The notable thing about those privately run, publicly financed schools that had a slogan of “school choice,” or “parental choice” to soften the reality of white supremacy’s educational embrace of the hoarding of opportunity and capital.
Those schools are the financial and ideological ancestors for charter schools that drain resources from traditional public schools and force the many to make due with less and less. Those early schools showed that segregated education could be profitable.
