Great to see Sanders pointing out a critical fact: the largest & most influential Dem think tank in DC is funded by large corporations & foreign regimes, and that shapes its ideology. Led by @neeratanden & other Clinton acolytes, it's now using those resources to attack Sanders:
Below is the key excerpt from the Sanders letter. CAP has been Ground Zero for the corporatist and militarist rot of the establishment wing of the Democratic Party for many years. documentcloud.org/documents/5839…
Beyond the corporate funders and foreign regimes that fund CAP, @neeratanden hides many of its largest funders behind a wall of anonymity, refusing to disclose who funds them. So the the largest DC Dem think tank is sustained with dark money americanprogress.org/c3-our-support…
As for @neeratanden's claim she has no role in what CAP's ThinkProgress publishes, read CAP's internal emails where Neera repeatedly forced TP to stop criticizing Israel in response to angry donors. TP has negotiated more freedom but the history is clear: theintercept.com/2015/11/05/lea…
Here are just a couple internal CAP emails where @NeeraTanden tried to force ThinkProgress to dilute or stop its criticisms of Israel in response to complaints from powerful Dems. TP may have more independence now but their ugly Sanders attacks are 100% aligned with CAP's donors
Here's former Think Progress (& ACLU) staffer @fshakir, now with the Sanders campaign, mocking @neeratanden's claim she hasn't interfered in or shaped editorial content of CAP's blog. Again, just look at the history of her emails and decide for yourself
Amazing. This was posted almost simultaneously with ThinkProgress releasing a series of hit pieces - including a slickly produced, classic TV negative ad - about Sanders. Even if Neera wants to stick with the fiction that CAP's donors don't shape TP, why doesn't she condemn it?
One hilarious moment in the CAP/TP history was when @mattyglesias had a blog at TP and used it to attack Third Way. His CAP boss Jennifer Palmieri (who later went to work at the Clinton campaign, of course) commandeered his post to insert a creepy apology foreignpolicy.com/2008/12/22/jen…
It's true TP has since negotiated for editorial independence but there is a long history of Neera & other Clinton acolytes censoring or forcing them to adhere to the party line. Now they seem to know what to do without being told to serve CAP donors: attacking Sanders at the top.
