About all I can add to this is that I have known and collaborated with my friend Richard for about twenty years now, and he is straight up one of the most honest, decent, sensible people in the entire community.
These truly bizarre attempts to smear him are not going to gain any traction, because we -- colleagues and friends like me and many others -- have his back.

@skdh I'm not sure whether to defend my statement here, or over in your thread (with much greater reach). How about I do it here, and quote-tweet it over there, sound reasonable?
@skdh When I wrote that, I considered saying something like "...and (to a certain extent) optimize...", but one of my pet peeves is people who add weasel-word qualifiers to everything in an attempt to control perception, so I didn't.
@skdh This is because I have total faith that nobody on Twitter would ever willfully interpret my statement in the most jaundiced possible way. That never happens. 😉

* waiting until it's "safe" to deploy,
* batching up changes into big changes that are decidedly unsafe to deploy,
* waiting to get paged and fretting over deploys,
* cleaning up terrible catastrophuckes

Let me just say how deeply, profoundly upset I am by the ableist attacks on ⁦@REasther⁩, who has played an incredibly important role in keeping me in theoretical cosmology. He’s one of the most decent people in the field, and this attack is shocking. newsroom.co.nz/2019/04/15/531…
Even if Richard did have a mental illness, that wouldn’t make these attacks anymore appropriate. Mentally ill people can be competent and excellent scientists and have a right to opinions about scientific projects.
You can’t call someone mentally ill just because they disagree with you :-/

We don't know for certain yet what lay behind the attack on @jamespeshaw, other than that the assailant was "shouting about the UN".

Regardless, it should be a cause for deep reflection from those who promoted and legitimised the UN Global Compact conspiracy theory.
This racist, far right conspiracy theory first emerged on Breitbart and the explicitly Nazi Daily Stormer, which claimed it would "Bring 60 Million Brown People to Europe". thespinoff.co.nz/politics/02-02…
The local version of the conspiracy went that the UN, under the sway of the "Globalists", was planning to take away New Zealand's sovereignty over immigration policy. None of this was true, as legal advice from Crown Law showed.
