I don’t know what I was expecting of Sacramento but “green thumb paradise” was not on my list. Feel like I’m in a Monty Don show
I am sure that Sacramento has its down/grim sides, and saw some of that, but great food, walker/biker paradise, fun bar scene, gorgeous gardens and trees, good public transit, friendly mixed class/race folks—well, that’s my impression.
So I guess the state capital planted southern plants—azaleas and camellias and dogwoods among others—to honor the CA dead who’d fallen in the south and the trend caught on, aided by one general store, and now it’s like half native plants, half you’re in Savannah.
But also with a lot of varieties of acers (Japanese maples) and palms and just any old pretty plant, and it isn’t perhaps the most sustainable thing but it sure is spectacular.
