We took a crazy/wrong road to go to the Malakoff-Diggins hydraulic mines, the Gold Rush’s most productive. The tailings caused the poisoning of Sacramento waters and drama, prompting ~first successful environmental lawsuit. Will take centuries for landscapes to revert.
The miners who worked here called their town Humbug
A super cute historic town/museum remains, full of things like this mortuary table and the giant sewing machine that made the enormous hoses that powered the giant water canyons.
Always with remembering that in Gold Rush California, and ever after, not all the key oartipants and workers were white
We did a loop trail around the canyon like terrain left by the water cannons .
Cabbage had a total blast
Anyway, Gold Country is amazing and this park is 100% the effort to go
So humbug means, essentially, a person who engages in deception or fraud. (Scrooge meant Xmas is a fraud.) Naming your mining town that is a bit extra
