No, a $1,000 grant that can't be used for rent or food will not cover my living expenses for the three months of summer when I don't get paid. 2/
Yes, it is in fact difficult/impossible to save three months of living expenses on a $17,000 stipend. 3/
No, tuition remission does not cover the ~$600 in fees I paid per semester on that $17,000 stipend before I was a dissertator. 4/
Yes, it is in fact a hardship to pay $1,700 upfront for a workshop (I see you, ICPSR) and wait around for reimbursement. 5/
No, paying students for work they do for you is not "transactional". It is compensation for time and effort. This is how employment works. 6/
Minimizing the role of pay in grad school punishes those w/ fewer resources (savings, supportive parents, etc.), elevates those who push through anyway, & perpetuates a culture of overwork & masochism while ignoring links b/n financial security & mental/physical health. /fin
