Good to see UK Parliament’s fire risk in spotlight after Notre Dame. Covered a few years back.

60 incidents that could have caused “serious fires” in last decade. Alarm system so bad that safety officers walk estate 24 hours to spot blazes.

V worrying.

Incidents included water dripping onto high-voltage electrical cables + power failures due to flooding.

In 2016 a fire broke out near room packed with electrical equipment after a light malfunctioned. Only spotted b/c someone happened to be walking past.
Was taken around the corridors and tunnels below Parliament. Packed with electrical wires. Often near the (v old) steam heating system.

Scenes like this not unusual.
One issue is that changes demanded after Windsor Castle fire - such as improving “compartmentalisation” which stops spread - weren’t fully adopted in Parliament. Logistical reasons blamed.
Parliamentary staff were v keen to shine light on problem. There was real frustration with politicians not taking issue seriously enough + approving full refurb.

MPs can’t say the warnings weren’t there.
