The worst thing about the whole "How come people are mad about Notre Dame but not mad about this other thing???" is that it takes an opportunity for solidarity and empathy and turns it into a zero-sum competition, driving us further apart.
It's reasonable that Catholics would care more about Notre Dame than the Great Mosque of Aleppo. Why scold them for doing so when you can share the similarities in a way that comforts them and broadens their perspective?
It would suck if your mom died and no one came to her funeral and then your friend's mom died and everyone mourned, but it does no good to scold your friend when you could reach out to share your experiences.
People often mention their own losses at funerals when eulogizing the dead. Now imagine a funeral where a speaker yells at everyone for mourning because they also lost someone. Just a waste of an opportunity.
