There are moments when I think our current situation is not at all like the 1930s. And then I see "innocuous" local news stories like this and think....holy schnikies!
The meeting of "respectable" white people that is depicted in this news segment reminds me of these pro-America meetings that the German Bund held all over the US in the 1930s. chicagoreader.com/chicago/1939-n…
A movement emerged in the 1930s, perched on the right edge of American politics, that regarded religious others (in this case, mostly Jews and Catholics) and political progressives (in this case, New Deal Democrats) as existential threats to the nation. Sound familiar?
Another similarity between the 1930s and today is that this far-right, pro-America movement was international in scope. Katie Hopkins and Steve Bannon are part of a cadre of trans-national leaders trying to foment xenophobic nationalism around the globe. newyorker.com/news/dispatch/…
"A global movement on behalf of xenophobia." I know, it sounds oxymoronic, but that's, in part, what fascism was in the 1930s....and it's, in part, what we're seeing rising around the globe today.
And if you haven't watched this 7-minute film on the 1939 pro-Nazi rally at Madison Square Garden, you really should. And then ask yourself why Fox News refused to air a commercial for the film. anightatthegarden.com
More analysis of and stunning photos from that 1939 event. rarehistoricalphotos.com/american-nazi-…
I also recommend this interview with the makers of A Night at the Garden. wnycstudios.org/story/when-naz…
h/t to @6079_WSmith for alerting me to an article about Nazi summer camps in 1930s US. That article had a link to this promotional film for one of those camps.
@6079_WSmith A few screenshots from that 1930s film, shot in the US. Note the American flag alongside the Nazi flag.
