1) There are three types of Republican politicians right now. These types are dictated by an individual politician’s risk aversion.
2) The first type have several possible names. Nevertrumpers. Orthodox Republicans (more my own phrasing). GOPe. This type takes no risks in their statements and policy platforms, much like the left right now.
3) There is no real risk associated with criticizing Trump. Most often they aren’t even in office (Flake) or are not up for reelection until 2024, when Trump leaves office (Mittens). They are going to stand in the way of policy because they can, failing that they’ll lob critiques
4) The second type are still risk averse, and they are the majority mainstream Republican politicians. Senate, House, and party leadership, most of the rank and file politicians.
5) They understand their fortunes are tied to Trump but they’ll take potshots on occasion if they can do so without retaliation.
6) Lastly are the Trumplicans. The House has the most of these.
