A thread. Staffing advice when meeting a Showrunner.
You have 30 min. Here’s how you break it down:
- 10 minutes of hellos. Where you are from, what your background is, etc.
- 10 minutes to fawn over the series. Tell the Showrunner why you like her goddamn script. Be SPECIFIC. (It’s amazing how many people don’t do this.). Be able to talk about the characters, the character arcs, where you see the show going.
- 10 minutes to pitch your secret ingredient. What makes you invaluable to the team. What specific experience, perspective, upbringing do you have that makes me think, I need to have her/him?
And Don’t leave the room without telling them how much you want the job.

Oh. And write a thank you note. Seriously.
Getting lots of questions about thank you notes. I’m curious what other showrunners think. I get the showrunner’s email from my reps and always send them. And have never gotten anything but positive responses back, even if I didn’t get the job. 1/
Have never had my reps say don’t send one. And I thoroughly appreciate them. But I get the sense most people don’t send them. Any showrunners think you shouldn’t send one?
And 1 other thing: 9 times out of 10 you don’t have to have story pitches ready. And personally I don’t ask writers 2 pitch story ideas. But every now and then someone will. So have a couple in yr back pocket. In other words, the more prepared u are 2 discuss the show, the better
There’s more! If you’re an upper level, be specific about how u can help make my life easier. U have no idea how incredibly consuming being showrunner is until you sit in that seat. Anyone who understands specifically how they can help lighten my load is going to have a leg up.
I also send thank you emails to execs and producers! I feel like it jump starts a relationship.
