With Germany now announcing that it is interested in joining the Belt and Road - as a group and I assume in the framework of a free trade deal - break with US on China policy seems complete
That of course also means relations will be heavily competitive, often conflictual, but always as part of the same system
And yet one could ask. Why is Altmaier saying Europe wants to join the Belt and Road rather than saying that Europe wants China to join the EU Eurasian connectivity strategy?

It is common in some authoritarian societies today that a book can only be published with a cover warning or a preface detailing its mistakes. We seem to be very close to adopting that model in Western societies.
There might be an official formula to eliminate doubt and streamline the process. For example, every monograph would start with the sentence “The book I am studying contains several ideas from which I want to immediately dissociate myself” with a footnote detailing those ideas
Authorities could also create new literary personae. For example there would be Pound and Pound*. The latter is the writer Ezra Pound but with all problematic passages expunged. And then each person could freely decide if he wants to read or write about Pound or Pound*

I cannot go along with this nonsense. Corbyn cannot write a foreword to Hobson? Salvini cannot quote Ezra Pound? I would think on the contrary that every educated person needs to have read Hobson and Pound

We seem to be getting rather close to that old Soviet style of regarding ideas. A book on Locke would start with 100 pages denouncing him as a bourgeois, then on page 100, “nevertheless one can draw one or two valuable insights from this bourgeois writer”
I must be old-fashioned. When I meet a person I want to know if she is a good, sincere, ethical person. When I meet a book I want to know whether it is an intelligent, original, eye-opening book

This is certainly not true. Portugal was a nation state with an empire. It was not an empire. The same I think was true of France, Britain, Italy, Belgium, Holland...

Maybe you can argue that Germany is unique in never having been a nation state before 1949, but that’s about it

2) Realize that those countries (or projects) will never be able to repay the debt for the investment but it's ok because #China gains geopolitical and military influence

(one wonders why nobody has has sought this type of influence in the past, except for the Soviets)

There were non-Brexit factors involved in the decision not to build the Nissan X-Trail in Sunderland. That's why the conversation is so messy, so let's just look at the Brexit effect for now. Thanks @SkyNews
With the X-Trail, a major factor was the new EU-Japan Free Trade deal, which a post-Brexit UK won't benefit from. So Nissan chose to build it in Japan, not Europe in general, but by the same logic, a UK OUTSIDE the EU-Japan deal would be even less attractive for other investment.
When Nissan said they would build the X-Trail here, this is what the government had promised them in 2016.
