@justinberman95 @chalcidfly @automattic PS. Maybe "subscription revenues" includes recurring support services as well, and pro-services are just one-off support sales. Still, the argument stands.

TIL what EC2's "Up to" means. I used to think it simply indicates best effort bandwidth, but apparently there's a hard baseline bottleneck for most EC2 instance types (those with an "up to"). It's significantly smaller than the rating, and it can be reached in just a few minutes.
For example, a c5.xlarge gets throttled to 1.14 Gbps after just 13 minutes.
A c5.2xlarge gets throttled to 2.28 Gbps after 26 minutes. So the baseline is 2X higher and takes 2X longer to reach. It also costs 2X more.

I enjoyed this article, even though I don't agree with everything. Lots of good stuff, and it covers many things I started to discover myself—even though I haven't been doing this anywhere near as long as @david_perell.

A few things I don't do: ...
"Writing on the internet is a career fast-track."

It could be. Or maybe not. Attaching such an expectation changes the game. I prefer sharing thoughts/code/ideas without any expectations. If anything comes out of it, it's just a bonus. For me it's a win as soon as I hit publish.
"Commit to one platform and own it."

This seems inconsistent with the other advice about the importance of distribution. I don't see the downside of not using multiple platforms to reach people that for whatever reason want to consume content on their preferred platform.

If you use S3 and you want to measure how much bandwidth exists between your host & S3, I open sourced a benchmarking tool for you: github.com/dvassallo/s3-b…

It works by measuring the download rate with different object sizes & parallel threads. Here's a c5.4xlarge getting >1GB/s:

0/ #CO is poised to join #WY in providing safe harbor from securities laws for consumptive tokens. #MT also introduced a similar bill. I want to highlight why I think this is important and what points I hope the SEC considers as it prepares additional guidance.
1/ This legislation builds on a core idea from #WY: It must be possible for entrepreneurs to develop and sell software that is inherently consumptive in nature (i.e., not a passive financial instrument and intrinsically is for use/consumption) w/o implicating securities laws.
2/ The SEC seems to agree and so have regulators/policymakers in just about every other developed nation. The difficulty arises, however, in defining the boundaries of this principle - stated differently, when if ever is usable software actually a security?

My @Uber driver last night, going home from airport asked me where was I coming from.
Told here about #WCEU
- what is that, she asked.
- the European Conference for #WordPress, I said.
Her eyes sparkling, she grabbed the wheel firm, looked in the rear view mirror at me and said,
almost whispering:
- I installed that last week on my own, I want to sell accessories for women online, to support my kids.
No wedding ring on her hand, but I did not ask details, not sure if single mom or not.
Instead, once we arrived, I spent 30’ going over ecommerce options
for WordPress, recommended @WooCommerce, explained #SSL and #GDPR.
She only interrupted a few times to say “wait, wait!” as she was writing notes on her phone.
I was cold, exhausted, my family waiting inside, yet I was fascinated to share as much as possible with her. #WCEU

I think we will look back at 2017 and see it as the year the #WordPress project started to fracture. As much as the community desperately wants to see WordPress as an enterprise CMS, projects like #Gutenberg show it is anything but.
Gutenberg is a phenomenal piece of software and everyone involved in it should be proud of what they have achieved. But we also shouldn't be afraid to call it what it is. It's a move toward WordPress being a site builder.
It's a shift away from fellow PHP-based CMSs like @CraftCMS, #EE, @statamic, @getgrav, @grabaperch, @drupal and the countless other custom-field based CMSs out there. It's a move away from one of the key features of a real enterprise ready CMS. Native structured content.
