I don't think we need any new Civil War statues, doubly so for generals (and Confederates at that); but if we must have any, Longstreet is infinitely more deserving than Lee (and Jackson, Lee's #Charlottesville statue buddy).

To understand Trump's comments about the Nazis and Robert E. Lee, you've got to remember that there are at least two versions of "Charlottesville" in the current American imagination:

The one millions of people assume must have happened.

And the one that actually happened.
A lot of Americans, especially white ones, assume that what *must have happened* in C'ville was a microcosm of how they see the country:

Liberals and conservatives went out into the streets, and there were extremists on both sides, but also "very fine people" on both sides.
If you also think that Robert E. Lee was a big league guy, and statues are pretty, and multicultural mobs are trying to take over *your* country by rewriting history, then you're prone to identify with the "right" in Charlottesville.

So you need SOME of them to be good people.

Robert E. Lee owned 200 slaves (which he famously tortured) then led a rebellion to extend slavery which killed 620,000 people.

Saying you're not a racist, you just love Robert E. Lee is like saying you're not an antisemite, you just love Hitler.
Here's an account, from the American Civil War Museum, of Robert E. Lee enthusiastically demanding the torture of human beings he considered his property.

I run into young people a lot who don’t know who Strom Thurmond was.
They should know.

He had a black daughter he didn’t acknowledge publicly.
He set a record for filibustering civil rights.

When the far-right attribute blame to George Soros for the *existence of non-white migration* they are using a polemical substitute for the anti-semitic conspiracy theory of "Jewish Communists" promoting “white g@nocide”.
If Facebook is any gauge then many Trump supporters voters are now completely radicalized to the point that all opposition to Trump is Soros orchestrated. And with the help of Fox News the GOP will move even further to the far-right to keep up.
A quick word re: the Klan getting their sheets in a twist about “white g@nocide.” It’s a conspiracy theory where white supremacy, the herrenvolk or the racially pure nation is under threat due to non-white immigration and “race-mixing” and that Jewish people are behind it all.
