The first time Bruce came to Houston to meet my family, I picked him up at the airport and drove him directly to my favorite Tex-Mex place, Ninfa’s on Navigation. He’d grown up in Massachusetts and everything in this part of the world was new.
I ordered him a huge lunch, and he wolfed down every bite. At the end, he said he loved it. Right then, I knew this was a guy I could live with forever. This week we were back in Houston for She the People, and we went back to Ninfa’s.
The food—and Bruce—were both better than ever. Happy birthday, sweetie.

Fox News is a hate-for-profit racket that gives a megaphone to racists and conspiracists—it’s designed to turn us against each other, risking life and death consequences, to provide cover for the corruption that’s rotting our government and hollowing out our middle class.
Hate-for-profit works only if there’s profit, so Fox News balances a mix of bigotry, racism, and outright lies with enough legit journalism to make the claim to advertisers that it’s a reputable news outlet. It’s all about dragging in ad money—big ad money.

Ever since I was little, I wanted to be a teacher. My 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Lee, was the first person to tell me that I could be a teacher too. And thanks to a high quality, public education, I did become a teacher. I want kids today to have the same opportunities I did.
America’s teachers are being crushed. Too many teachers are working multiple jobs, drowning in student debt, and struggling to teach on shoestring budgets and insulting salaries. America is failing our teachers—and when we fail our teachers, we fail our future.
There's no greater example of how we're failing students and teachers than Betsy DeVos, the worst Secretary of Education we’ve seen. Appointed despite her conflicts of interest, she's spent her time protecting for-profit colleges that break the law and cheat students.

Happy #MothersDay! Today, I’m honoring my mother. One morning after my daddy’s heart attack, I remember standing in their bedroom. Her face was red and puffy, with wadded-up tissues next to her. We’d just lost our family station wagon. Our house was next.
Spread out on the bed was a black dress. It was that one dress that every mom had—it only came out for weddings, funerals, and graduations. She kept saying, “We will not lose this house. We will not lose this house.” She’d never worked outside the home, and she was terrified.
I watched her while she pulled it together, put that dress on, put on her high heels, blew her nose, walked to Sears, and got a minimum wage job. And that minimum wage job saved our house, but more importantly, it saved our family. That story is written on my heart.

First time at Canterbury Pride today and I was surprised how I welled up watching the procession. A Pride in a small city, a city where you sometimes wonder where all your fellow queers are at, is a moving experience of togetherness and visibility.
The other highlight was obviously that the LGBT Tories stall was *tumbleweed*, lol.
So happy too to see all these young people so out and so confident, and with such sophisticated understanding of gender and sexuality. This new generation are educating *us*, and that's brilliant.
